Exploring the Ruins of South America

Generally, RC stayed in our current home or the hotel room while we explored a new area. On occassion, he would wait in the car if we discovered something interesting along the way.

When we traveled around South America by car, we found some remote places where we were the only adventurers. RC loved being outside with all the new scents and sounds as long as no other people came too close.

After securing his leash to his halter, he'd lead us on a slow and methodical walk investigating every rock and tree. When we'd want to pick up the pace, we'd carry him until he became too squirmy and insisted on his freedom.

Fortunately for us, RC seemed to understand when we were in new territory, he should stay close. There were short times when we'd remove RC's leash, but it was only after we verified no one was nearby and we were miles away from traffic. One of us always stayed very attentive to RC's whereabouts. You must be careful and be sure you know how your cat will react to new places.

I remember one time we went to a deserted beach and thought RC might enjoy the sand. Some how I didn't think that beaches have WATER -- RC hates water!! He thought the crashing waves were a terror and ran for cover. It was the last time we made that mistake.
